FCC Updates Hearing Aid Compatibility Rules for Wireless Handsets

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has issued a correction to its Hearing Aid Compatibility (HAC) Rule for Wireless Handsets, initially published as a Final Rule on November 13, 2024. This update addresses minor inconsistencies and date corrections in section 20.19 of the FCC regulations, which govern hearing-aid compatibility for wireless devices.

Key Revisions

The correction, published on December 27, 2024, involves updated deadlines for compliance with Bluetooth coupling, handset model hearing-aid compatibility, and hearing-aid compatible handset availability:

  • Adjusted compliance deadlines from June 12, 2028, to June 13, 2028, and from December 12, 2028, to December 13, 2028.
  • Clarified technical requirements, including emission limits and specific handset model capabilities, ensuring accurate application of the rule.

Advancing Accessibility

The FCC’s HAC rules aim to enhance accessibility for individuals with hearing loss, providing seamless integration between hearing aids and wireless devices. These changes ensure technical precision and compliance for stakeholders, promoting a more inclusive mobile technology landscape.

Stakeholder Implications

Manufacturers, service providers, and distributors are urged to review these updates and align their processes accordingly to meet the revised timelines. Devices authorized under existing waivers are allowed continued operation, ensuring minimal disruption during the transition.
