What is EN 18031?
EN 18031 represents a pivotal European cybersecurity standard series, primarily focusing on the cybersecurity of internet-connected devices as mandated by the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) 2014/53/EU, particularly Article 3.3(d/e). Its primary objective is to ensure that a wide array of wireless devices – including IoT devices, wearable equipment, smartphones, and other connected products – rigorously comply with mandatory and stringent cybersecurity requirements. These encompass critical aspects such as user privacy protection, fraud prevention, and the assurance of overall network safety.
EN 18031: Defined Product Scope
The EN 18031 standard series delineates specific applicability across various categories of internet-connected radio equipment:
- EN 18031-1:2024: This part is broadly applicable to all internet-connected radio equipment.
- EN 18031-2:2024: This part extends its scope to internet-connected radio equipment that processes sensitive user data, including personal, location, or traffic-related information. Additionally, it specifically addresses product categories such as childcare products, children’s toys, and wearable devices.
- EN 18031-3:2024: This part is precisely tailored for internet-connected radio equipment that facilitates financial exchanges, encompassing funds, digital assets, or virtual currencies.
