Mexico’s Telecom Overhaul: Mandatory Lab Testing

This November, two new mandatory technical dispositions from the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFETEL) will replace the long-standing “Type B” Homologation process, which relied on expert documentation reviews (perito), with standardized lab testing.

This is a shift for manufacturers of low-power and Wi-Fi devices. Accredited Certification Bodies and test labs are now authorized and ready to process applications under these new, mandatory standards.

IFT-016-2024: New Rules for Low-Power Devices

Effective Date: November 3, 2025

This standard introduces a unified testing framework for Low-Power Radiocommunication Devices (DRBP) operating between 30 MHz and 3 GHz. It applies to a wide range of products, including:

  • Generic Low-Power Transmitters
  • Wireless Microphones
  • Auditive Assistance Devices
  • Wireless Alarms

IFT-017-2023: Mandatory Testing for Wi-Fi

Effective Date: November 7, 2025

This is the new rulebook for Wi-Fi devices, establishing official test requirements for equipment in the 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands (including Wi-Fi 6E). This standard officially replaces the digital modulation portions of the older IFT-008-2015 for devices operating in the 5725-5850 MHz band.

Takeaways for Your Certification Strategy

For any new applications submitted after the effective dates, the documentation-based “Type B” route is no longer an option for these products. Full laboratory testing against these new standards will be required.
