ANATEL has launched a public consultation to modernize the homologation seal, proposing advanced security features like encryption and QR codes to protect the market from uncertified equipment.
For manufacturers exporting mobile phones, routers, drones, and other telecom equipment to Brazil, the physical (or digital) stamp of approval is upgrading.
Why the Change?
The initiative is a direct response to vulnerabilities identified in the current labeling model. Counterfeiters and grey-market importers have found ways to replicate existing seals, allowing untested—and potentially unsafe—equipment to enter the Brazilian market. ANATEL’s goal is to make the homologation seal virtually impossible to forge, ensuring that only devices passing rigorous testing standards reach the consumer.
What’s Being Proposed?
ANATEL is exploring a suite of security mechanisms to verify authenticity. The consultation invites the sector to discuss several proposed features, including:
- Visual Security: The introduction of complex visual elements and special security inks that are difficult to replicate.
- Digital Verification: Integrating encrypted data and QR codes directly into the seal, allowing inspectors and consumers to instantly verify a product’s status with a smartphone.
- E-Labeling Evolution: Refining procedures for electronic labels (e-labels) and direct printing to ensure they meet the new security standards without hindering manufacturing processes.
