Hong Kong’s OFCA Signals 3G’s Sunset

The Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA) has officially given the green light to China Mobile Hong Kong Limited (CMHK) to cease its 3G services, effective June 30, 2025.

The Curtain Call for 3G: What OFCA’s Announcement Means

  • The Who & What: OFCA has consented to CMHK’s plan to retire its 3G network.
  • The When: Services will continue until June 30, 2025. After this date, CMHK’s 3G chapter closes.
  • The Nudge for Users: OFCA is advising affected customers to consider upgrading their services or, crucially, replacing their older 3G-reliant devices before the deadline.

This allows for the valuable spectrum resources to be “refarmed” or repurposed, fuelling the very 4G and 5G networks that offer faster speeds, lower latency, and a universe of new service possibilities.

Beyond the Sunset: Hong Kong’s Brighter 4G/5G Horizon

Remember those new and updated technical specifications for 5G equipment (HKCA 1081, HKCA 1082, and the revised HKCA 1057) This 3G cessation is perfectly in tune with that forward-looking approach.
