The European Communications Committee (ECC) has given a green light to the future of IoT. The approval of ECC Decision (25)02 on June 27, 2025, creates a harmonized path for low-power devices (LPD-S) to communicate with satellites in the 862-870 MHz band.
This is a major change for LoRaWAN and other LPWAN technologies, finally enabling seamless pan-European deployment.
Your Compliance Checklist: The Core Facts
For product developers and manufacturers, this decision simplifies market access but requires attention to a few key points.
- Satellite Networks Must Comply: Your device can only communicate with satellite systems that adhere to a strict Power Flux-Density (PFD) limit of -142 dB(W/(m²·4kHz)). This is the critical rule to prevent interference with existing terrestrial services.
- Your Device is Still an SRD: The hardware of your low-power device must still meet the established technical requirements for Short-Range Devices (SRDs) as defined in ERC Recommendation 70-03.
- Use the Approved List: The ECC now maintains an official list (in Annex 2 of the decision) of satellite operators who have formally committed to compliance. The initial list includes Lacuna Space and Connecta IoT / Plan-S, with more to be added.
Your Path to Market
This new regulation removes major barriers, creating a predictable and unified market. The focus is clear: ensure the satellite network you partner with is compliant, and your device will follow established SRD certification paths.
