Brazil’s ANATEL Updating New 5G and IoT Standards

On October 1, 2024, Brazil’s National Telecommunications Agency (ANATEL) launched Public Consultation No. 48 to gather stakeholder feedback on proposed updates to 5G and IoT standards. These updates aim to align Brazil’s telecom regulations with international benchmarks, such as 3GPP TS 38.521-1 for 5G and 3GPP TS 36.521-1 for 4G. The consultation will remain open until December 9, 2024.

Expanding Network Coverage and Boosting IoT

With 4G covering 75% of Brazil and 5G adoption still growing, ANATEL’s updated standards are crucial for expanding network coverage and enhancing connectivity. Key updates include:

  • 5G NR-NTN: Extending 5G services to remote areas without the need for terrestrial infrastructure.
  • RedCap: Providing lower-cost, energy-efficient IoT solutions for sectors such as agriculture.
  • LTE Cat 1bis: Enhancing M2M (Machine-to-Machine) communication using existing LTE infrastructure.

These upgrades are expected to boost network resilience and support IoT growth, particularly in rural and industrial sectors.

Get Involved

ANATEL encourages telecom operators, device manufacturers, and industry experts to provide their feedback through the official consultation platform. This collaborative approach will help shape balanced, supportive regulations that foster innovation and growth. The consultation is open until December 9, 2024. Be part of the change.
