Japan’s MIC Opens Public Consultations for 800 MHz Wideband

Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) opened two pivotal public consultations. They are draft reports that lay the groundwork for next-generation low-power communications and, most excitingly, outdoor Wireless Power Transfer (WPT).

Unplugging the Outdoors for 920 MHz Wireless Power

For years, WPT has been almost exclusively limited to indoor, short-range applications. This move by the MIC to define rules for outdoor use is a step forward.

Imagine a future of wirelessly charged agricultural sensors, infrastructure monitors, or even commercial drones. If your product portfolio includes WPT technology, this is a critical document to review.

Powering Up the 800 MHz Band and Seeing in 3D

  1. 800 MHz Wideband Low-Power Radio Systems: This aims to enhance the technical rules for low-power devices in this popular frequency band, likely enabling more efficient and robust IoT, M2M, and other wide-area communication systems.
  2. 3D Positioning Systems: The MIC is also refining the technical requirements for advanced positioning technologies. This could open the door for more precise asset tracking, logistics, and industrial automation solutions.
