Chile Launches National Cybersecurity Agency (ANCI)

On January 2, 2025, Chile officially launched its National Cybersecurity Agency (ANCI), marking a big step in the country’s efforts to safeguard its citizens, businesses, and institutions from growing cyber threats. Established under the Cybersecurity Framework Law, the ANCI represents a cornerstone of President Gabriel Boric’s security agenda.

Cybersecurity Governance

The ANCI’s creation reflects a strong political consensus on the critical importance of cybersecurity in an increasingly digital world. As a technical oversight body, the agency will regulate, monitor, and enforce cybersecurity standards for essential service providers—both public and private—while introducing mandatory protocols and standards for compliance under the new framework.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

The ANCI will play a multifaceted role in Chile’s cybersecurity landscape, including:

  • Defining Essential Services (SE) and Vital Operators (OIV): Ensuring clarity on critical infrastructure and its protection.
  • Issuing Mandatory Standards and Protocols: Establishing national benchmarks for cybersecurity across sectors.
  • Policy Advising and Coordination: Assisting the President in formulating action plans and cybersecurity strategies.
  • Education and Prevention: Promoting cybersecurity awareness and incident prevention through nationwide initiatives.
  • Managing State Secure Connectivity Network: Overseeing secure communications within public institutions.
